My granddaughter had her tongue pierced last week. Imagine my surprise when she showed it to me. As an Orange County dentist, I know the risks involved in tongue pierces.

I read an article before about a 22-year old man who died after getting his tongue pierced. Apparently, the man’s brain has multiple abscesses after infection in the piercing spread from the bloodstream to the brain.

That should make anyone think twice before getting their tongue pierced. But despite the health risk, many still do it. Just like famous people such as Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Phillips.

Is fashion really more important than health? I just can’t understand teens these days. The clear message though is that tongue piercing is a big no-no and therefore, should be avoided.
