AMD ATI CrossFire Xpress Chipsets Renamed
Posted On 11/16/2006 02:56:16

AMD recently completed its acquisition of ATI and absorbed ATI.com. Nevertheless, ATI’s two performance chipsets remained branded by ATI. AMD’s CrossFire Xpress 1600 and CrossFire Xpress 3200 chipsets still carry ATI branding. AMD will be changing the names of its ATI CrossFire Xpress 1600 and CrossFire Xpress 3200 chipsets according to the latest roadmap.

The ATI CrossFire Xpress 1600 chipset will be renamed to AMD 480X CrossFire. This is the second time the RD480 chipset has been renamed. It was previously named Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire until ATI changed it to CrossFire Xpress 1600 to match the then newly released RD580 Radeon Xpress 3200 nomenclature. Features of the AMD 480X CrossFire remain unchanged. The chipset still supports two half-speed PCI Express x16 slots in CrossFire with a PCIe link to the SB450, SB460 or SB600 south bridges.

The enthusiast ATI RD580 CrossFire Xpress 3200 will be renamed AMD 580X CrossFire. Features of the AMD 580X CrossFire will remain the same. The chipset will continue to support two full-speed PCIe x16 slots with a PCIe link to the SB450, SB460 or SB600 south bridges

Microsoft plugs Windows worm holes
Posted On 11/16/2006 02:55:47

God that sounds so star-trekkish. Microsoft has released six security bulletins as part of its monthly patch cycle. Of the eight flaws that were fixed, five of were considered critical. Three of the security holes could be exploited remotely by an anonymous attacker without the user having to take any action, such as clicking on a link. The remaining five would require people to visit a malicious Web site or open a malicious file for an attack to succeed, according to Microsoft's alerts.

CRITICAL:
-
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (922760)
- Vulnerability in Microsoft Agent Could Allow Remote Code Execution (920213)
- Vulnerabilities in Macromedia Flash Player from Adobe Could Allow Remote Code Execution (923789)
- Vulnerability in Workstation Service Could Allow Remote Code Execution (924270)
- Vulnerability in Microsoft XML Core Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (928088)

NVIDIA Announces nForce 600i Family
Posted On 11/10/2006 02:29:20

Next to the GeForce 8800 release yesterday, our review was don on a new nForce series 600 mainboard, the 680i actually. The new nForce 600i family spawns three new products—the nForce 680i SLI, 650i SLI and 650i Ultra. The three chipsets will target hardcore enthusiasts, performance gamers and mainstream gamers respectively. With the nForce 600i chipset family, NVIDIA has adopted a new naming scheme to differentiate its Intel and AMD products. Beginning with the nForce 600i family, NVIDIA chipsets will have “i” designations for Intel chipsets and “a” designations for AMD variants.

For hardcore enthusiasts NVIDIA has the nForce 680i SLI. It features compatibility with Intel Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo, Celeron D, Pentium 4 and Pentium D processors. There’s also plenty of headroom with the nForce 680i SLI too. NVIDIA has engineered the nForce 680i SLI to run at a 1333 MHz front-side bus for future processor compatibility and overclocking headroom.

In addition to the 1333 MHz front-side bus support the nForce 680i SLI features a dual-channel DDR2 memory with various memory dividers to take advantage of SLI-Ready memory modules. NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI based motherboards also feature Quicksync Technology that accelerates memory performance when the front-side bus and memory speeds are synchronized.

As with the previous nForce 590 SLI Intel Edition the nForce 680i SLI supports two full-speed PCI Express x16 slots for SLI technology. In addition to the two full-speed PCI Express x16 slots, nForce 680i SLI motherboards will feature a third PCI Express x16 slot. The third slot will run at half-speed and have an x8 electrical interface. NVIDIA claims the half-speed PCI Express x16 slot is adequate for physics processing.

Other notable features of the nForce 680i SLI include LinkBoost, FirstPacket, DualNet, high definition audio and MediaShield technologies.

On the budget side of things is the nForce 650i SLI and 650i Ultra. Both chipsets are virtually identical with the exception of SLI support. The nForce 650i chipsets lack most of the features of the nForce 680i SLI. Nevertheless, it still features a dual-channel DDR2-800 memory controller, Gigabit Ethernet with FirstPacket technology and high definition audio. Interestingly enough, the nForce 650i series support two IDE channels while the nForce 680i SLI only supports one.

EVGA is the first manufacturer to release an nForce 680i SLI based motherboard. Images of the EVGA nForce 680i SLI motherboard was previously released by NVIDIA. The EVGA nForce 680i SLI motherboard features three PCI Express x16 slots with two full-speed and one half-speed. EVGA has based the motherboard on NVIDIA’s reference design. The motherboard supports all features of the nForce 680i SLI including the LinkBoost, FirstPacket, DualNet, MediaShield and high definition audio technologies.

Expect the EVGA nForce 680i SLI and other nForce 680i SLI based motherboards to cost south of the $300 border. Expect NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI and Ultra based motherboards should be more cost effective, most likely below $150.

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, the hard-drive division of the Japanese electronics giant, will sell hybrid hard drives that cut battery consumption for notebooks in 2007, as well as include a function that encrypts data automatically, said Larry Swezey, director of mobile hard-drive product strategy and marketing at Hitachi.

Capacity on notebook drives will increase as well. In the first half, the company will release a 2.5-inch-diameter 200GB drive that spins at 7,200 revolutions per minute, and follow it up in the second half with a 2.5-inch-diameter notebook drive that will spin at 5,400 rpm and hold about 250GB. Hitachi's largest 7,200-rpm notebook disk now holds 100GB, while the 5,400-rpm model tops out at 160GB. In desktops, Hitachi will come out with a drive that holds a terabyte in 2007.

Rivals like Seagate Technology and Samsung will come out with similar products. The actions of these companies, though, collectively underscore how drive makers are trying to woo customers through added features, rather than just capacity size. Notebooks, of course, are one of the fastest growing segments for drives. About 118 million 2.5-inch drives (the standard in notebooks) will ship in 2006 and that figure will likely rise to 224 million by 2010. By then, 2.5-inch drives will hold around 750GB due to technologies such as patterned media.
