The power of the neglected sense
Posted On: 12/22/2006 07:23:08

So, Rachel got this perfume as a gift today. The smell of it sent my brain strait back about 10 years into the past. Some things have that power. Old pictures, a song you haven't heard in a long time, but nothing does it for me quite like a smell. I'm not sure why exactly it happened, or what it was that used to smell that way, but it was very clear when it put me to. Now, for some reason, I feel like I can talk to my 13 year old self to tell him what to expect. I find it interesting the things I chose to mention and the things I chose to omit. I know far better than he does what he is capable of, and I don't want to let him know what his life has become, not to change it, but to keep him from thinking that there is some kind of limit to what he can achieve.

What would you say to a 10 years younger version of yourself? Given that you can't change what will be for them, just to encourage them. What would you say? Would your younger self be disappointed with how little we have advanced as a people, or impressed with all of the new technology and it's commonality among the people of today? Assuming that they would be unchanged by the visit, and you would be the only one to learn anything from the experience... how do you think it would go?
