Graphics chip maker Nvidia is confident it can stay independent even after its main competitor ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is acquired by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD.N: Quote, Profile, Research), a senior executive said on Tuesday.
The $5.6 billion deal between ATI and AMD has sparked speculation that Nvidia would end up merging or partnering with No. 1 chip maker Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research).
"It reinforces our philosophy that we don't want to be tied up," Mike Hara, Nvidia's vice president of investor relations, told Reuters in an interview when asked if Nvidia felt the need to seek a similar deal.
"I don't think anything changes. In fact, what we've already felt and seen I think gives us the energy to push faster. While AMD and ATI figure out what their future looks like, we know what ours looks like," Hara said.
